Wednesday 03rd December 2014Artist Spotlight: Emilio Cresciani
Primarily, art is about affecting the thoughts of others. Whether it's instilling a sense of wonder, joy, sadness or anger, art is found in many places that we might not think to look - that's one of the primary responsibilities of an artist. Enter Emilio Cresciani, a photographer based in Sydney, Australia, who has been dubbed by local media as the 'Picasso of bird poo'. While out for a walk one day in the undeniably beauty of Venice, Italy, while most would be gazing at architecture and sculpture, he was struck by the patterns created by bird excrement, and began a photo series that culminated in a series entitled 'Flight Patterns'.
While it may not exactly be glamourous to be known as the guy who takes photos of bird poo - "I got a lot of strange looks," he said in an interview with the Australian Broadcasting Company. "When I told people what I was doing some would laugh." Many comparisons have been made to the work of the famous painter Jackson Pollock, who is known for his trademark style of abstract expressionism using paint splatters on canvas.
To Cresciani, however, the subject matter is akin to landscapes. Speaking to the Daily Telegraph in Sydney, he said, “I know its not a subject that many people would think of as art but really nature is the source and place of all creativity. Natural forms have their own beauty and it's the randomness of the patterns that inspired me. We love looking at cloud formations and the colours and shapes of sunsets so why not other aspects of nature?”
It's hard to disagree with him, although his particular execution of the exploration of this theory might leave a little something to be desired in the minds of some of his viewers who can't get over the actual subject matter itself.
Cresciani's previous works have focused on the waste generated by our consumer society, and finding beauty in the mundane detritus of our world seems to be his developing theme, which he will hopefully continue to refine and develop further.
